POINT Football…..Youth Work Week Wales 2022 – 5 Ways to wellbeing.

Once upon a time, way back in 2008 a youth worker called Sid, was talking to the young people about what they wanted to do at POINT.

The young people all loved kicking a ball around outside, but as the garden area is small at the youth centre – there was not much room to play a proper game and they just wanted a informal time to play football. Some of the young people attending POINT already played for local teams, but everyone wanted a session where it didn’t matter about ability or playing scheduled matches. All that was wanted was an informal weekly game connecting with others and enjoying sport…. This is when POINT football was born!

On 16th April 2008, POINT hired the sports hall at Fishguard Leisure centre for the first time and held their first football session. Since then POINT have been improving the physical health of young people through weekly football sessions. This year we celebrated our 14th year of these sessions which have benefited over 300 young people! We have also provided the Football ASDAN where young people have gained a certificate and more recently ran an intergenerational football match with the Fishguard and District Round Table – which was exceedingly fun (POINT won- obviously)

Our football sessions fit fantastically into the 5 ways to wellbeing by being active and connecting young people with their peers, friends and people with a shared interest.
